End-of-Life Animal Rehoming in Florida
The animals we care for are not things we own.
In the Hawaiian language, “kahu” (pronounced KAH-hoo) means guardian, protector, caretaker, trusted steward, or someone entrusted with the care of something precious or cherished. It’s a sacred role that’s rooted in responsibility, reverence, and love for people, animals, the environment, or items.
When someone is terminally ill and no trusted family or friend can take their pet, the future of that animal can become a heartbreaking concern. Rather than housing animals in foster care or a shelter, we provide a free service (thanks to generous supporters) to help move their pets directly from their home into a second forever home within the state of Florida. The original Kahu always makes the final decision on their pet’s next Kahu.
When an animal is terminal and has no Kahu, we believe they deserve to spend that time in comfort, not in a shelter or alone. We help place these animals with compassionate people who feel called to offer love for the time they have left. We share their story, needs, and timeline clearly, and match them with a home that understands what hospice care looks like.
The Next Kahu borrows this word with deep respect for this concept. Although I am not Hawaiian, my family has been tied to the islands and its culture; I grew up calling my grandmother Tūtū and honoring traditions, language, and culture of Hawai’i.
In that spirit, this project is about becoming the next kahu for those who are leaving love behind, and for those who still need to be held as they make their way toward goodbye.
