For Terminal Patients
We offer our matching and rehoming service at no cost to Florida residents who have been diagnosed with a terminal illness. As a small organization working with limited resources, we want to assist in every situation we can, but we need to make sure we're a good fit first. Please take a moment to look over our requirements below before you fill out an application.
Requirements
You must live in Florida and be facing a terminal illness.
Rehoming is only available to those with a terminal diagnosis and not for financial or behavioral reasons. You must be the legal guardian or have legal authority over the pet.
This may include the immediate next of kin or someone who has been given legal power of attorney. Proof may be required.Your pet must be spayed/neutered and have up-to-date vet records.
In most cases, if records aren’t available, a vet check must be completed before matching begins.Your pet stays with you until a match is found.
The Next Kahu does not house animals: we help keep pets with their person for as long as possible. You choose the next Kahu.
We provide vetted options, but you (and/or your care circle) make the final decision and coordinate the handoff. You must agree to the full Terms of Service.
By submitting an application, you agree to them in full.
The Process for Finding a Kahu
Step 1: Apply
Simply fill out the application form below and provide as much information as possible.
Step 2: Initial interview.
We’ll set up a time to meet. This will be a short interview to speak live. If we determine it is a good fit, we will provide you with next steps to gather any information we still need, vet records, etc.
Step 3: Your pet is listed.
We will list your pet and begin looking for the best match. When a potential Kahu reaches out, we will perform the initial vetting. After, you will be provided with all pertinent information and given guidance on how to best navigate scheduling meetings.
Step 4: Your own vetting begins.
You’ll take the time to get to know the potential adopters and make a decision. This might include calls and in-person meet & greets.
Step 5: Adoption
You’ll be provided with our adoption guide to help navigate the process. As our adoptions are agreements between the family and you, you will then work together to arrange transportation, as well as any other details like being present for death, etc.
Step 6: Stay in Touch!
Often families stay in touch with the adoptees to see how the animal is doing. This provides comfort to all involved that the adoptable is thriving with their new Kahus.
